Overview The Diabetes Hope Scholarship Program is a needs- and merit-based award that recognizes the determination of young people living with type 1 diabetes. Recipients are chosen for their ability to manage the day-to-day demands of diabetes care while facing and overcoming personal obstacles, sustaining solid academic performance, participating in community and extracurricular activities, and prioritizing their health.
Program history and impact For 27 years the Diabetes Hope Foundation has expanded the Scholarship Program to reach more youth across Canada. In 2025, donors and community partners helped fund 46 scholarships awarded to outstanding students nationwide. To date, the Foundation has supported 989 students living with diabetes through this program.
Support beyond the award Every scholarship recipient is paired with a peer mentor through the HOPE Connects Peer Support Program to help during the transition to post-secondary life and adult diabetes care. Many past awardees later give back by serving as peer mentors, joining selection committees, and speaking at Diabetes Hope Foundation events.

Eligibility Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- Be in their final year of a Canadian secondary school or CEGEP and planning to begin an accredited post-secondary program in September 2026.
- Be registered with a Canadian pediatric diabetes program or healthcare provider and be in their transition year to adult diabetes care.
- Have received care for type 1 diabetes from a pediatric healthcare team for at least one year as of the application deadline.
